ABOUT

Fred Lown has taught in classrooms for over 40 years.  He provides individually tailored tutoring sessions to students grades 5 through Graduate School.

Fred Lown's specific expertise includes:

WRITING: Essay term papers, research papers, college supplemental essays, personal narratives, short stories and more. 

​

AMERICAN AND WORLD LITERATURE: Reading coach for various levels of comprehension and analytical thinking.

 

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS: Edited, consulted and revised more than 100 college and graduate school essays.

 

SAT & ACT Prep: Individually coached students in their preparation for either the SAT or ACT Test.

 

POETRY: Writing in different forms, e.g. rhyming verse, blank verse, sestina, villanelle, sonnet, haiku.

SHAKESPEARE STUDIES: Knowledge of Shakespeare canon; specifically taught Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

UNITED STATES HISTORY: Extensive knowledge from the age of exploration to contemporary events and issues.

TEACHER SCHOLAR GRANT

Fred Lown was awarded a Teacher- Scholar grant in 1996. This award allowed him to participate in a Brookline-Cambridge-Harvard collaborative program during his sabbatical year. Six teachers from each of the three educational institutions met weekly at Harvard's Graduate School of Education to share teaching practices and participate in a cooperative learning environment. Fred taught a seminar on King Lear, wrote a biography of Langston Hughes and taught a class he developed called "Early Adolescent Behavior and Middle School Teaching."

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

NEW YORK CITY: Teacher training and student teaching at I.S. 44 on West 66th St. and Amsterdam Avenue.

RANDOLPH, MA: Grades 7-9 social studies at The Kennedy Junior High School.

BROOKLINE, MA: The Lawrence School and The Runkle School, grades 7 and 8, English and Social Studies.

HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION: Designed and taught a course on early adolescent behavior and pedagogy.
